Is Tonga is your next fishing adventure?

As we were flying into the island of Vava’u, Tonga I knew straight away that I was in for quite the treat.

Tonga is part of Polynesia and most of the 170 islands that make up this country are lined in white sandy beaches and coral reefs. As with all of our adventures, fishing is the main attraction and this certainly lived up to expectations. We were targeting Blue Marlin in comfort, aboard the 40ft Caribbean Game boat.

The beauty of Vava’u is that your are right on the doorstep of one of the world’s best sportfishing destinations. Only 20 minutes from the lodge you have your lures in the water trolling around in 1300m of blue water targeting these beautiful fish. We had 4 action packed days fishing and managed to Tag 9 Bill Fish including 8 Blues plus some bi catch of Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo and Dogtooth Tuna and Mahi Mahi which made for beautiful fresh dinners each night.

The highlight for me was on day 3 when we managed to break the boat record by catching and releasing 5 Blue Marlin. Yep 5. To make it more satisfying the crew were from New Zealand and secretly hated the fact that a group of Aussies hold their boat record.

If that wasn't enough we also got to swim with Humpback Whales. It was truly one of the most incredible experiences I have had on the water. We had 3 dives, 1st with a mother and calf, 2nd with a male and female mating and 3rd with what they refer to as a ‘’crazy whale’’. Imagine jumping in the water with a 30 tonne Whale that is seeking your interaction and is very interested in getting into your personal space. This is the Crazy Whale.

Most afternoons were capped off by a swim around the local islands with a cold beer or cocktail relaxing on a white sandy island with nobody in sight.

Another highlight for me was spending an afternoon playing cricket with the local kids. An Australian bloke by the name of Peter Morehead has been spending the last few years teaching the local kids cricket and it was great to put some smiles on faces.

I was totally blown away by the experience in Tonga.
